Section 2  / Lesson 1 - Describing and Comparing Data

Below, I have written 29 questions, which are based on the content covered here. Using these, the study notes and the class video, you should be able to be able to fully understand and be able to use the language in your IELTS writing test. For each question, I have provided examples just like in the study notes which should help if you are struggling. All these questions are based around this IELTS Writing task one question: 

General statements

 

Possessive ‘have / has’

 

1. What descriptive adjectives can you use to describe small amounts of something?

     Example: Salmon sushi has limited amounts of fat.

​

2. What descriptive adjectives can you use to describe medium amounts of something?

     Example: Pepperoni Pizza has middling amounts of fat.

​

3. What descriptive adjectives can you use to describe large amounts of something?

     Example: Lasagna has enormous amounts of fat.

  

4. Fill in the gaps with one of these adjectives: Lasagna has a __________ number of calories.

5. Fill in the gaps including one of these adjectives: Salmon Sushi ____ __ __________ number ____ calories.

6. Fill in the gaps including one of these adjectives: Caesar Salad ____ ____ ___________ ________ ______ protein.

 

Specific adjectives

 

7. What is an adjective for something which contains fat.

     Example: calorific = contains calories

 

8. Convert one adjective from question 3 into an adverb.

     Example: high to highly

9. Write a sentence about lasagna using these two words.

     Example: Lasagna is highly calorific.

 

Comparative adjectives

           

10. Make a comparison between Lasagna and a hamburger using the adjective ‘fatty’.

11. Make a comparison between a pepperoni pizza and a hamburger using the adjective ‘calorific’.  

​

12. Add an adverb to describe how big the difference between a pepperoni pizza and a cheeseburger is in terms of their calories.

     Example: Lasagna is far fattier than a hamburger.

13. Add a number to describe how big the difference between a pepperoni pizza and a cheeseburger is in terms of their calories.

     Example: Lasagna is just over 9 grams fattier than a cheeseburger.

14. Approximately, how many more times calories does a pepperoni pizza have compared to caesar salad? Write this in a comparative sentence.

     Example: A pepperoni pizza is around three times fattier than salmon sushi.

15. What percentage higher calories does lasagna have compared to Salmon Sushi? Write this in a comparative sentence.

      Example: Salmon Sushi is 200% fattier than a pepperoni pizza.

 

More / Less / Fewer

 

16. Out of the nouns 'calories', 'protein' and 'fat', which two are uncountable?

17. How many more calories are there in a lasagna than a pepperoni pizza?

18. How many times more protein is there in salmon sushi than a Caesar salad?

​

19. What percentage more protein is there in a cheeseburger than salmon sushi?

​

20. How many times more fat is in a Caesar salad than protein?  

 

      Examples:

      a. There are two more calories in a cheeseburger than in a pepperoni pizza.

      b. There are two times fewer calories in a pepperoni pizza than in a lasagna.

     c. There is ____ more protein in a cheeseburger than in a pepperoni pizza.

     d. There is nearly two times more protein in salmon sushi than fat.

21. Rewrite the answers to questions 17 to 20 using the verb 'to contain'.

     Example: A cheeseburger contains two more calories than a pepperoni pizza.

Superlatives

 

22. Write two superlatives about the fat content of the food.

​

     Example: Lasagna is the most calorific food.

 

Most / The majority

 

23. Choose the correct answer: Most of the food contains large amounts of fat. / Most food contains large amounts of fat. (Note: Please look grammatically as this doesn’t match the data)

24. Choose the correct answer: The majority of food contains large amounts of protein. / The majority of the food contains large amounts of protein. (Note: Please look grammatically as this doesn’t match the data)

Comparing Equals

 

25. Compare the calories of a pepperoni pizza and a cheeseburger.

​

26. Compare these both to lasagna in terms of their calories.

 

     Example: A pepperoni pizza is almost as fatty as a cheeseburger.
